Homelessness

Over a number of years I worked closely with Hunter TAFE and their involvement with Hunter Homeless Connect Days. Students, teachers and various community services come together for one day of the year to support those that are homeless or are at risk of homelessness.

Evelyn, at 77 years of age, is a human dynamo and her abusive background is her driving force in helping people who are homeless. This project hopes her story will heighten awareness and encourage appropriate funding for people who are experiencing homelessness. Evelyn's story was undertaken for the 2016 Homeless Connect Day.

This project involved capturing the lead up to and the actual activities of the Youth Homelessness Matters Day. Over 26,000 young people aged between 12 and 24 are homeless in Australia however there are many more homeless youths whose statistics are not counted. As many young people "couch surf" (staying with a range of friends and relatives whilst living out of a backpack) they do not access services so become hidden statistics. Students undertaking a Diploma in Youth Work were involved in a couch convoy to raise community awareness of this situation.

This video captured the 2014 Central Coast Homeless Connect Day through images and interviews. This took place on 7th August 2014 and involved attracting services that support people who are homeless or are at risk of homelessness. Service providers included refuges, support services, hairdressers and beauticians, food hampers and Government and non-Government support organisations. The finished product provided Hunter TAFE and other service providers with a promotional resource.
